General
and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation
In addition to all
the amenities offered by Air Force Village West the
General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation, a
national organization which provides financial
assistance to widows of all retired Air Force
personnel, is located on the premises. It offers
financial help to indigent widows needing assistance;
wherever they are residing for as long a period as
necessary, even for a lifetime. Funds are provided
gratis with no strings attached on the premise that
these women served with their husbands in the Air
Force, all the way through to retirement, and deserve
to live out their lives in comfort and dignity.
The Air Force
Assistance Fund is the Foundation's main source of
support. This support is given with the caveat that
in as much as all the money given to the Assistance
Fund comes from active duty members of the Air Force,
for the most part, support must be confined to widows
of Air Force personnel and therein lies the tale.
From the very
beginning, while the majority of the residents were
Air Force officers, there was a substantial number of
officers from other branches of the military services
moving in. In particular, Mrs. Helen LeMay was quite
concerned that help was available only to Air Force
widows in residence. To correct this imbalance she
donated a substantial amount of money to be used to
support all widows living in AFVW regardless of
military service. Further, she was instrumental in
obtaining an agreement from the Foundation to set
aside a substantial amount of all funds donated by
residents for helping all residents of AFVW not just
retired Air Force members.
Today this amount is
fairly large and assistance is available to all
residents of the facility without regard to branch of
service. The residents of Air Force Village West are
truly a family with all members treated alike. Further
information concerning financial assistance or
donations is available. (800)554-5510.
